Two-time documenta participant Giovanni Anselmo (1934-2023) died on December 18, 2023. He was one of the most influential representatives of Italian Arte Povera and European conceptual art.

In 1969 - before inviting him to participate in documenta 5 - Harald Szeemann had already shown works by Giovanni Anselmo in the exhibition "When Attitudes become Form" at the Kunsthalle Bern. During documenta 5, Anselmo's light projection "Tut-to" was on display in the staircase of the Fridericianum as part of the exhibition section "Individual Mythologies": Two slide projectors continuously threw the syllables "Tut" and "to" (tutto = everything) onto the wall surface - a principle that he developed further with his well-known (but not presented in Kassel) projection "Particolare" (a part of/particular).

Anselmo was represented a second time at documenta 7 in 1982. His work "Il panorama con mano che lo indica" (1982) combined a photorealistic pencil drawing on a large-format sheet of paper with an installation made of hewn granite stones, which were made to float with the help of steel cables.
